Wild Rescue – January Fire
A fire started on a nearby property, and burnt the Wild Rescue nature reserve on the south side of the gravel road. Despite tremendous efforts from 3 municipalities, fire engines, and helicopter and fixed wing support, the fire jumped the road, and burnt a further 60 ha of fynbos on the property. Thanks to fire fighting teams, the revamped clinic narrowly missed being burnt, and a vigil was kept throughout the night fighting to prevent the fire from burning the thatched homestead and cottages. Sadly some wildlife were killed on the reserve, and 9 houses were burnt down in the area.. The regeneration of new plants however shows the miracle and natural cycle of fire and regrowth in the fynbos ecozone.
